For starters, I am not a dermatologist or work for any skin care brands that I am about to share with you in this post. I just want to share products that have personally helped me reduce the appearance of blemishes, acne scars, and hormonal acne. If you struggle with hormonal acne, but are hesitant to take oral medication to help, I provided a list of suggestions and products . You do not need to spend a lot on skin care products to have healthy skin!
Keep in mind, everyone is different and has different skin types or complexion concerns. I did not struggle with hormonal acne until my early 20s. So, if you struggle with "adult" acne or hormonal acne, I hope this article helps. To be honest, if you haven't noticed any improvements after following a diet plan or after following a skin care routine for roughly a few months to a year, it might be necessary to talk to a dermatologist to explore medication for hormonal acne. Please be patient, reducing the appearance of acne or acne scars will take time. No one has perfect skin; don't let photoshop or social media fool you.
1) Diet - Try your best to cut back on the diary and lower your sugar intake. I recommend taking an over the counter probiotic daily and eating foods that are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. For example, consuming green tea, fruits, veggies and vitamins A,D, and E can prevent hormonal breakouts.
2) Have a skin care routine. I have sensitive skin, so it is important for me to stay away from face washes, creams, or serums that are fragranced. Products that are fragranced = harsh chemicals that irritate the skin or can cause more breakouts.
*CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser ( $14.64 on Amazon) - use in shower A.M. or P.M.*
A.M. Routine
step one :THE ORDINARY Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12% (30ml) vitamin C Brightening Serum ( $11.75 on Amazon) This product helps reduce the appearance of acne scars and texture. step two: CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion ($12.99 on Ulta) step three : SPF everyday, yes even during the winter! I recommend Supergoop, the Glowscreen SPF 40 ( $17-$36 on Supergoop -depending on size) or Dr. Jart+ Tigar Grass Color Correcting Treatment SPF 30 ( $19 on Sephora for the standard size ) Don't purchase the larger size for this specific product because it is a lot more money. The standard size has enough product, you wont run out of it quickly. The Dr. Jart+ SPF is great to reduce appearance of red marks from acne or acne scars.
P.M. Routine
step one : Remove makeup - Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water, For All Skin Types, 13.5 Fl Oz ( $6.43 on Amazon) step two: THE ORDINARY Retinol 0.5% in Squalane - 30ml, reduce the appearances of fine lines ( $13.95 on Amazon) - start out using this product for a few nights a week and then eventually work your way up to using this product every other night ( pea size amount for whole face) step three: CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion ($12.99 on Ulta)
I do not use eye cream or recommend using it. Personally, I don't think eye creams "do anything" and it's not worth the money. All you need is a fragrance free moisturizer for the face.
In conclusion, I know how frustrating it is to struggle with hormonal acne; especially as an adult. Sometimes shopping for skin care products can feel overwhelming. It is a common misconception to think that you have to spend a lot of money to have great skin. That is simply not true. If you have a simple skin care routine, explore your options with a dermatologist, do your research, and trust the process; you will notice improvements over time. The goal is to have healthy skin, not perfect skin. Perfect skin does not exist.
